On Wednesday, July 23rd, Florah visited one of our newest WEP (Women Empowerment Program) Groups, deep in Maasai land in Kajiado, Kenya. The group is called Nasaruni, which means ‘rescued,’ ‘helped,’ or ‘saved.’ The ladies chose this name for their group because they felt that they had been in other groups that had not been successful, and at last, they are confident that this group will be the one to save or help their efforts at economic empowerment. The group consists of five Maasai women who are neighbors and friends, and who are individually involved in bead-making, shopkeeping, and animal rearing. We first met the women at the Women Leaders training in May this year, where
we oriented about 77 Maasai self-help group leaders on the TLAfrica WEP program and equipped them with some financial skills. Abigail, the secretary of the Nasaruni group, was aggressive in encouraging the group to try out the program. The group applied for a loan of Kes 100,000, which was given to them in June 2025.

During the visit, we saw the goats and the cow that they had purchased with the loan, fellowshipped in prayer, shared a meal, and discussed their future plans. They used the loan to buy 7 goats and 1 cow, which they plan to sell during the festive season at the end of the year at a profit. The group has a vision of buying tents to rent to the community, and later a plot of land in their nearest town for business activities.
Their friendship and vision for a better future together are an inspiration for other women in the community.
