“They will still bear fruit in old age; they will stay fresh and green.” — Psalm 92:14

On December 11–12, 2025, TLRwanda had the privilege of hosting a meaningful two-day conference dedicated to retired pastors—faithful servants who have spent their lives shepherding God’s people. Held in a spirit of honor, reflection, and renewal, the gathering brought together 32 participants and guest speakers under the theme:

“Caring for retired pastors while preparing a better future for the young is a pillar of sustainable development.”

The conference welcomed respected leaders and partners, including Dr. Maoka from the Democratic Republic of Congo, Dr. Kato, and a representative from the Musanze District Office in charge of citizen welfare. Together, they affirmed a powerful truth: a healthy society and church flourishes when generations walk together—honoring the wisdom of elders while equipping the strength of youth.

Wisdom That Continues to Bear Fruit

Opening the conference with the Word of God, Dr. Gato preached from Numbers 8:23–26, highlighting the biblical distinction between the responsibilities of younger and older Levites. He emphasized that while physical strength may diminish with age, wisdom, discernment, and spiritual insight only deepen over time. Drawing from Proverbs 13:22—“A good person leaves an inheritance for their children’s children”—he reminded participants that legacy is not only financial, but spiritual, relational, and moral.

Key takeaways from the teaching included:

  • Retired pastors are called to leave a positive and faithful legacy for future generations.

  • Young leaders depend on the guidance, lessons, and example of those who have gone before them.

  • Faithfulness to God does not end with retirement.

Dr. Gato concluded with Psalm 92:15, likening faithful elders to trees that continue to grow and bear fruit. His message affirmed that older generations remain vital to the life of the Church and the nation and deserve care, respect, and meaningful engagement.

Embracing Retirement with Purpose and Hope

Dr. Maoka led an encouraging and practical session on self-care in the retirement years, reminding participants that growing older is not a burden but a blessing. His teaching addressed the importance of caring for the body, mind, and spirit through:

  • Light daily activities that help maintain strength without strain

  • Simple physical exercises to promote health and mobility

  • Balanced nutrition, including fruits and vegetables that strengthen the body and prevent disease

Beyond physical health, Dr. Maoka emphasized the importance of embracing old age with gratitude and purpose. Retirement, he shared, is a season to continue sharing wisdom, nurturing relationships, and preparing for the years ahead with peace and joy. He encouraged participants to maintain a positive love for life, noting that self-care and community help prevent illness, loneliness, and discouragement.

A Shared Pulpit Once More

The final day of the conference was marked by gratitude, reflection, and renewed joy. Retired pastors from different regions of Rwanda expressed deep appreciation for the opportunity to gather—many sharing the pulpit together once again. The conference became a sacred space to remember God’s faithfulness through past challenges, celebrate years of ministry, and reaffirm a shared desire to continue mentoring and encouraging young men of God to serve faithfully.

Participants also expressed heartfelt thanks to Dr. Faustin Ntamushobora for his love and continued support, and to TLAfrica for the generous hospitality shown throughout the conference, including the provision of a welcoming venue, meals, and accommodation.

Moving Forward Together

This gathering was more than a conference—it was a testimony to the power of honoring legacy while investing in the future. As TLRwanda continues its mission, the voices, wisdom, and prayers of retired pastors remain an essential part of building strong churches, resilient leaders, and thriving communities across Rwanda and beyond.

Faithful God,
We thank You for the lives and ministries of those who have walked long roads of obedience and service. Thank You for the wisdom they carry, the prayers they have prayed, and the seeds they have planted in generations they may never fully see. As Your Word promises, may they continue to bear fruit in every season of life.

Teach us to honor our elders with care, dignity, and love, and to receive their guidance with humility and gratitude. Strengthen the bridge between generations so that wisdom and strength may walk hand in hand. May the Church and our communities flourish as young and old labor together for Your glory.

We place every retired pastor into Your loving hands, trusting that the work You began in them will continue until the day of Christ Jesus.
Amen.
